Home Video Picks of the Week

Some times making the trip out to the movies is a little too time consuming and it's much more enjoyable to stay in and enjoy a good movie on the couch. Heading into the weekend I've got two solid picks for you guys to check out that should give you enough variety to choose from.

My first pick just hit DVD and Blu-Ray and that is the Kevin James comedy Here Comes the Boom.

This movie is just flat out fun. Kevin James is immensely likable as a high school teacher who takes up amateur MMA fighting in order to save the music program at his high school. The film is light and fluffy but it has a lot of heart and likable performances all around. The fights are entertaining and so is everything that doesn't take place in the ring. Bas Rutten is fun in a supporting role as a former MMA fighter that helps James' Mr. Voss train. Rounding out the class are Henry Winkler and Salma Hayek both in fun supporting roles. Listen guys, this movie isn't going to change your life but it will definitely entertain you for couple hours. Get some friends together and have good time with this flick.

My second pick is last year's Academy Award winning documentary Undefeated.

This is a wonderful documentary about the football program at Manassas High School in Memphis, Tennessee. This program is run by coach Bill Courtney, an inspiring and effective leader. The documentary chronicles the struggles of the team as they strive for a winning season and try to become the first team in the history of the school to win a play-off game. Coach Courtney is a volunteer coach for a team with almost no funds and who's players are more accustomed to police presence than a camera crew. This is an inspiring story full of real people and real struggle. As somebody who came up in a similar neighborhood I really felt for the kids in this film and one particular moment actually made me tear up. It's no surprise this film won the 2011 Oscar for best documentary. You could do much worse than this heartfelt and heartwarming story.

Both of these movies are available on various VOD services such as iTunes, Amazon Video, and Vudu among others as well as on DVD and Blu-Ray. If you're looking for something good to watch you can't go wrong with either of these.
